Why
Flamingos?
My love for flamingos
started back when I was still a child. They were graceful and pink,
and I loved pink. Plastic flamingos became incised into my imagination.
When I met Robbie, now my husband of seventeen years, it was exciting
to find out that he also had a passion for the pink flamingos. When
we got married, we had flamingos on the top of our wedding cake. We
titled the wedding The Pink Performance and Robbie wore
PINK painted classic wing-tip shoes to match his cummerbund and bow
tie. Some people embrace and love the plastic flamingo for all of
its kitsch and glory. Others see the plastic flamingo as an indication
of having bad taste. Is the flamingo an indication of social class
differences? I see the plastic flamingo as an object that often is
seen on the outside of what many feel is tasteful. This made me think
of bringing the outside in, and this is why I have decided to include
a flamingo into my room. Embracing life with joy in my heart and having
the freedom to explore my imagination has definitely influenced my
outlook about time, reality, and pink plastic flamingos. |
Betty
and Guillermo's Time and Reality
The
exploration of my worldview in relation to time and reality led
me to the two plastic pink flamingos in my backyard. When you
buy plastic pink flamingos, they come as a pair. They are not
identical, ones neck is standing up, and the other is stretching
forward. This exploration led me to create my video, The Adventures
of Betty and Guillermo. I began to explore the notion about what
it would be like if these two flamingos were to explore time and
reality. I wondered what these two flamingos would experience
in relationship to time and reality? A few days later, on a drive
in the West Texas panhandle, I noticed a sign to Earth, Texas.
I thought, I have never been to Earth, how ironic. Then I thought
about my pink flamingos, they also had never been to Earth. Thus,
The Adventures of Betty and Guillermo. Why Betty and Guillermo?
Because these are the names the plastic pink flamingos wanted.
