Treasurer's Report
- Sara Wilson McKay, Treasurer, reported that CSTAE includes ___ current members and a total cash balance from last year of $____.
Business:
- Motion to increase dues from $20 to $25 Ð cost of celebrations and publication of journal. Has not been an increase during SaraÕs tenure. Membership updates across the years compared to increasing journal costs. Costs of party co-sponsored with LGBTQIC and history of celebrations across past 3 years. Wants to investigate other ways to hold celebrations without tapping the fiscal resources of the group. Concerned about not having enough money to pay for journal cost.
- Karen wants to keep with the partying mode and wants folks to feel encouraged to go. Likes the ticketed event idea. Seconds the increase in dues.
- Question about the increase and will it come into effect with this set of payments? What about people whoÕve already paid?
- Sara Ð memberships run April to April, and will try to notify folks of increase.
- Karen asks about increasing student dues (currently $15).
- Laurel is concerned about increasing student costs. Comparison to LGBTQ dues for students. Discussion of how students are supplemented (about $4 per person).
- Jim Ð moves $20 retired, $20 student, $25 regular
- Vote Ð passed increase
- Pam Ð will give out tickets for event Friday night with paid membership.
- Laurel asks when new volume of journal will come out. Probably late April/May.
- Sara wants to know if Wanda is investigating ways to reduce costs. Sara notes that a way to reduce costs is to have journal ready by conference so they can be distributed there to save on postage.
- Wanda concerned with the quality of journal. Should we move up submission deadline? On Saturday evening at 8:00 there will be a session about writing for the journal and this will be discussed there. Decision will be posted on the caucus website.ÒPenn State CSTAEÓ on Google will locate the website.
- Conference sessions for this year Ð want to make process transparent. 26 proposals this year (down from last year). NAEA gives 11 slots. Kevin Tavin and Pam McLaughlin reviewed proposals for quality, diversity, new presenters, difference locations around country, and adherence to caucus mission. Can subdivide 50 minute slots to get more. This year extended the 11 to 18. Slots are proportionate to membership but dependent on size of the venue booked for the conference.
- Karen asks how the readers are selected. It has been incoming, outgoing, and current coordinator. Also submits proposals for business meeting, writing for the journal meeting, and other meetings that do not count against the total sessions allotted to the caucus.
- The business meetings have been used to do a little of everything. Membership meeting will include setting the topic for the journal for the next year. Sometimes ideas have been proposed at executive meeting and then proposed at the membership meeting. Any member can propose a theme, though. Usually try to tie it in with the theme for the next conference. Actually, the theme tends to be discussed across the meetings and developed.
- Laurel Ð do libraries purchase them? Sara says we have some, but Karen has gotten it onto Proquest database and now there is an increasingly wider circulation. Jim wants to know if we can get stats on distribution rates for next year.
- Pam Ð question about non-members proposing under the caucus and wanting to get those people to join.
- Jim wants to propose the idea of a discount for members joining multiple caucuses (particularly LGBTIC and WomenÕs caucus). . Sara thinks this will be more attractive to students. Jim wants to propose a session for next year proposing solidarity across intrerest groups.
- Pat Ð used to have advertisements for all the other journals in CSTAEÕs journal. Some discussion about how this stopped happening.
Journal Theme:
- Pam Ð letÕs talk about the journal and get that conversation going. Laurel Ð talked about the presentation yesterday with student voices (the performance session led by Therese Quinn). Sara Ð interested in censorship/censure Ð copyright issues. Karen talks about problems in some communities with using the words ÒsocialÓ or ÒculturalÓ for art education activities/education. Would consider further exploration of these ideas. Debbie mentions the idea of having access. Problems around having anything Òcontroversial.Ó Neil mentions example from ChalmersÕ presentation. Linda wants to look closely at the details and facts of what is being objected to Ð to get an overview of what triggers specific instances of censorship Ð mentions the concept of legalities and using other knowledgeable sources to respond to censorship. Karen Ð if this is an important thing people are talking about then we may be able to figure out things to do to deal with censorship.
