Journal of Social Theory in Art Education

CALL FOR PAPERS • JSTAE Volume 28
This year's theme is

OTHER(W)ise
Editor: Wanda B. Knight (wbk10@psu.edu)

The Journal of Social Theory in Art Education (JSTAE) serves as an alternative voice for the field of art education through the promotion of scholarly research that addresses social issues, action, and transformation as well as creative methods of research and writing.

JSTAE invites submissions of articles, reviews of books, films, Web sites, performance/actions, and exhibitions for an upcoming 28th volume of JSTAE that explore the theme of OTHER(W)ise. The theme opens doors to focus on different or otherwise untapped art topics, alternative thinking, conduct, habits, or ways of being, apart from supposed or expected topics. Moreover, it opens doors to look at other forms of wisdom and knowledge, and what constitutes that knowledge and wisdom, how it is organized and who is empowered to teach it, and just as critically, what qualifies as evidence of having learned it.

Potential contributors are also encouraged to consider different methods and means, besides the ones already cited in the field, to increase the quality of art education and equity of opportunity for learners. Otherwise, invisibility and silence of some forms of knowledge serves to normalize others and, therefore, maintain their dominance. Moreover, other eyes–as implied by the “ise” in OTHER(W)ise–provide multiple perspectives that help shape the vision for the field of art education in exciting new directions we might not have otherwise explored.

 Topics for consideration might include:

  • Art education Otherwise
  • Wise and Otherwise
  • Other(s) Eyes
  • Otherwise in Art Education
  • Art AfterMATH…
  • Flirting on the Brink
  • Ignite: Catalyst For?
  • Taking a Leap Otherwise

The JSTAE submission deadline is September 1, 2007 for Volume 28. To be considered for publication, original manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the 5th edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association. Manuscripts should range between 2500-5000 words in length with an abstract of 100–150 words. Images are encouraged with manuscripts and should be sent in digital format (jpg, gif, or png) with accompanying copyright permission. Double space all manuscripts, including abstract, quotations, tables, references, and notes. Include a brief biographical statement along with a cover letter designating that the manuscript is original, has not been previously published, and is not under consideration elsewhere. To facilitate the anonymous review process, please place your name only in the accompanying cover letter and not in the manuscript. Manuscripts should be submitted electronically, preferably in rich text format or Microsoft word with .doc extension to Wanda B. Knight at wbk10@psu.edu.

The Journal of Social Theory in Art Education (JSTAE) is a publication of the Caucus on Social Theory & Art Education (CSTAE), a National Art Education Association Issues Group. Its editorial policy is in compliance with the CSTAE's constitutional mandate:
to promote the use of theoretical concepts from the social sciences—which include, but are not limited to, anthropology, sociology, and political science—to study visual culture and the teaching of art; to inform art educators about theory and practice in the social sciences, thus acting as a liaison between social scientists and art educators; to encourage research into the social context of visual culture and teaching art; and to develop socially relevant programs for use in the teaching of art.

Journal Process and Timetable: JSTAE is published annually and typcially distributed to current CSTAE members at the NAEA annual conference and mailed in May to those who did not attend NAEA. CSTAE members are encouraged to offer your services as JSTAE reviewers. To do so, contact Wanda B. Knight at wbk10@psu.edu with your publication citations and a statement of areas of expertise, or include this information with your CSTAE membership form. CSTAE members discuss a theme for each year's journal at the CSTAE Annual Business meeting at the NAEA conference. Submission deadline is September 1 for the next Spring's publication.

Editors serve two year terms. Description of editor responsibilities are in the by-laws. Click here to see a table of contents of volumes 1-27.
